Statement AUAS-UvA on situation in Turkey

21 July 2016 15:23 | Communication

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) have taken note of the current situation in Turkey and stand ready to offer advice and support to their students and staff.

Like many sections of Turkish society, the failed coup attempt of Friday 15 July has also affected the education sector. As a result, students and staff of the UvA and AUAS, both in the Netherlands and Turkey, are currently being affected by the political situation in Turkey. The UvA and AUAS’s primary concern is for the members of their academic community.

The UvA and AUAS support the statements of the VH, the VSNU and the European University Association, which is also strongly supported by the League of European Research Universities. The UvA and AUAS are of the opinion that academic research and higher education are imminently international and that the principles of academic freedom are sacrosanct.

The UvA and AUAS stand ready to answer any questions and, where possible, offer support to students and staff. This also applies to Turkish students and staff in the Netherlands and those currently residing in Turkey.

AUAS students and staff can contact AUAS Studievoorlichting (+31 20 - 599 5422).
