2nd International Cross-industry Safety Conference (ICSC)

There is a plethora of approaches to safety, respective models and management methods that have been proposed by the academia. Various ‘best practices’ are applied across industry sectors and are included in standards and regulations. The diversity of models and approaches serves the scope of science, but when it comes to practice, does not allow the establishment of a common language regarding safety. Academics might focus on problems that the industry is not highly concerned with, and the industry may not be knowledgeable about research results that can be used to solve safety related problems. Moreover, even best practices might not be widely shared across different industries.

For all industry sectors safety is one of the main focal points. Organizations have recognized that safety improvements contribute to the achievement of broader business goals. The ICSC is a unique opportunity to bring together the various industry sectors and academia.

We aim to function as a platform for disseminating and sharing knowledge and experience about safety, and we intend to become a hub for discussing current and future safety challenges and ways to deal with those.

Dave Snowden

Dave Snowden (1954) is Founder and Chief Scientific Officer at Cognitive Edge. He has pioneered a science-based approach to organizations drawing on anthropology, neuroscience and complex adaptive systems theory. He is a popular and passionate keynote speaker on a range of subjects and is well known for his pragmatic cynicism and iconoclastic style. Dave holds visiting chairs at several universities worldwide. Dave is an award-winning journalist for over more than 25 years. He is also on the editorial boards of several Knowledge Management journals and is an Editor in Chief for Emerge, Complexity and Organization. Dave holds a BA Philosophy and an MBA Financial Management.

Ewout Hiltermann

Ewout Hiltermann (1980) started his career in 2001 as First Officer on the Boeing 737 at Lufthansa. After five years and 2500 flight hours, he joined KLM Cityhopper to fly the Fokker 70, which he still does. Early 2010 he joined the Flight Safety Department as Project Manager for the implementation of the Safety Management System (SMS) and as Chief Investigator. He holds the position of Safety & Compliance Director since early 2014. He also spoke in 2013 at the Flight Safety Foundation’s International Air Safety Summit in Washington, DC. Ewout holds a Commercial Pilot License (KLM flight academy) and does a part-time bachelor Business Administration.

In 1^st of November 2017, we offer three tutorials as part of the program of the 2nd International Cross-Industry Safety Conference.

13:30 – 15:00: Increasing depth, fairness and effectiveness of safety investigations

13:30 – 15:00: Ten steps to achieve safety leadership

15:30 – 17:00: Safety metrics: assess and quantify the gap between Work-as-Imagine and Work-as-Done

This conference is organized by the Aviation Academy of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS). Dr. Robert J. de Boer, professor of Aviation Engineering, chairs the organizing committee. The Aviation Academy performs research into real-life cases and problems and our goal is to improve and innovate professional practice. We perform all of our research projects in close cooperation with industry, governmental agencies, scientific institutions and universities. This ensures a solid connection with state-of-the-art scientific knowledge, as well as a focus on the most urgent and current problems and challenges on the work floor.
