Housing FAQs

Amsterdam faces an ongoing housing crisis and securing accommodation can take several months. Finding permanent housing often requires considerable time, effort and costs. The AUAS cannot guarantee housing or help for all incoming students as the housing crisis goes beyond our capacity. Carefully consider this challenge and its potential impact on your studies before committing to studying here.
We strongly advise you not to travel to Amsterdam if you have not secured housing before 15 August. We do not recommend starting your studies in a frustrating and stressful position and resorting to hotels or hostels for a long time.

If you are not eligible for nor offered a room by AUAS Housing, you will need to organise your own housing. We'll be honest - it's hard work. However, by starting your search early you can find a room that helps you get the most of Amsterdam and from your studies.

If you are coming to Amsterdam as an exchange student, you will automatically receive an email inviting you to apply online for AUAS Housing. This will arrive once your application for an AUAS exchange programme has been approved (in early November for the Spring semester, in early June for the Fall semester). Be aware that availability is limited. About 90% of all exchange students will receive a positive housing lottery result.

Once you have registered for an AUAS degree programme, and you are eligible for housing, you will automatically receive an email in early June inviting you to apply online for AUAS Housing. Be aware that availability is limited. About 50-60% of all international degree students will receive a positive housing lottery result.
Rent in AUAS Housing is between €370 and €1150 per calendar month, depending on the type of room. In addition to rent, you must pay administrative fees, a refundable deposit and in some cases local taxes.

The AUAS offers student housing in various off-campus buildings spread across the city of Amsterdam and Diemen. Different room types, price ranges and locations are available.
