dr. W. van Winden (Willem)

Willem van Winden (1971) is a professor of urban economic studies. He completed his PhD in 2003 at the Erasmus School of Economics, Erasmus University of Rotterdam. He then worked as university lecturer and researcher with the European Institute for Comparative Urban Research. He has published many international comparative studies, among others about cities in the knowledge economy, ICT & the city, the future of industry in European industrial regions, and economic clusters.

In 2008 he was assigned the professorship of the Amsterdam Knowledge Economy at the CAREM. Recently his research has focussed on innovative coalitions in the city, aimed at making the city more sustainable and more attractive. Furthermore he has initiated many research projects in the wider field of the metropolitan economic development.

Van Winden is a founder of the Master’s programme in Urban Management, a new interdisciplinary and applied practice oriented Master’s programme aimed at professionals in the Amsterdam region. He is a director at the AUAS spearhead programme of Urban Management, in which the AUAS attempts to raise its research into metropolitan issues to a higher level, and the Smart Cities Entrepreneurial Lab.

Aside from his professorship at the AUAS Willem van Winden is also the director and co-founder of Urban IQ, an internationally oriented consultancy for urban economic policy. He teaches various Master’s programmes such as the City Developer Master’s programme and the Urban Management and Development Master’s programme (both at Erasmus University Rotterdam). Willem is also associated with the European Institute for Comparative Urban Research (Euricur), and acts as an advisor to URBACT, a European institute aimed at improving inter-city knowledge exchange.
