Intercultural Competence in Higher Education

Research Symposium

Event

We want to bring together lecturers and researchers from the Dutch and Flemish academic community working on the development of intercultural competences in the context of higher education. We will present state-of-the-art research on this theme, and provide an opportunity for networking and catching up with colleagues.

Keynote speaker:

Dr. Lily Arasaratnam-Smith

Prof. Dr. Lily A. Arasaratnam-Smith is the Deputy Vice President Student Affairs at Alphacrucis College in Sydney, Australia. Her primary area of expertise is intercultural communication, particularly intercultural competence and intercultural contact-seeking behaviour. Her first book, Perception and Communication in Intercultural Spaces (University Press of America, 2011), presents "intercultural spaces" as a new framework with which to understand intercultural communication in today's culturally diverse communities. Her recent work on higher education includes the book Developing Intercultural Competence in Higher Education: International Students’ Stories and Self-Reflection (Routledge, 2022). Lily is a fellow and the current president-elect of the International Academy for Intercultural Research (IAIR).

Presenters:

Leonor Gaitan-Aguilar

Leonor Gaitan-Aguilar is a PhD Candidate and lecturer at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Her research focuses on global citizenship in higher education. She will present her latest work on how different uses of digital media may contribute to global citizenship among students in an international university program.

Albert Mhangami

Albert Mhangami is a PhD Candidate and lecturer at Zuyd University of Applied Sciences. His research focuses on the longitudinal development of intercultural competences in higher education. He will present his latest work on how previous intercultural experiences, such as international mobility or growing up in a diverse environment, may affect intercultural competence of students at the start of their study program.


Dr. Gian-Louis (GL) Hernandez

Dr. Gian-Louis (GL) Hernandez is an Assistant Professor of Intercultural Communication and Responsible Leadership at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS). His research focuses on institutional representations of diversity and intercultural communication. He will present on "Learning through Critical Being", a transformative course for scholar-practitioners in International Higher Education (IHE) that guides participants on a journey of critical self-reflection and empowerment. Designed primarily for educators but open to all learners, this course explores the evolution from critical thinking to critical being.
