Six institutes of higher education have come together and launched a consortium called Urban Research and Education Knowledge Alliance (U!REKA). The six institutes will cooperate internationally with regard to education and research in the urban context. The collaboration between the six partners was officially acknowledged by signing an agreement during U!REKA's launch conference in Amsterdam.

The six U!REKA partners are: Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (the Netherlands), Edinburgh Napier University (United Kingdom), Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences (Germany), Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (Finland), Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences (Norway) and University College Ghent (Belgium). The institutes share a commitment for international cooperation, professional education, applied research and the further development of staff.

Together, the institutes will develop applied research in urban environments and share their output through conferences and publications. Students attending the institutes will in the longer term be able to use each others' educational programmes, both at bachelor’s and at master’s levels, and follow courses within the framework of summer schools. Research themes include: sustainability, ageing populations in cities, education in the urban environment, logistics and mobility in a city, quality culture in education and research in education.

With this international collaboration, the institutes aim to improve the quality of their education and research, better prepare their students and staff for international developments and deliver a significant contribution to regional and urban entrepreneurship and innovation within a European context. U!REKA also wishes to enhance its visibility within Europe and in the European Union.
