The Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences struck the first pile today for the Conrad building. By building the ‘Conradhuis’, the AUAS will complete the Amstel Campus, a bustling urban campus at the heart of the Wibautstraat. The AUAS is creating more space for education and research in the process. In 2021, its doors will open to more than 30,000 students and employees who will study, work and conduct research there.

The Conrad building has been long in the making. This means that many people have contributed to its existence. Many of them attended the festivities on the Rijnspoorplein to mark this important moment, which kicked off with a speech by AUAS Rector and Executive Board member, Geleyn Meijer. He thanked everyone for their contributions to this project, including local residents in the neighbouring area who also brainstormed on the design. The Conrad building will primarily be home to the AUAS’ Faculty of Technology, which is now situated at the Leeuwenburg building (next to the Amstel Station).

The building’s design is typified by its glass atrium, which connects the lower part of the building to the Theo Thijssen building next door. The open terrace structure and the large window frames provide a spacious and inspiring effect. Since the Conrad building will primarily house the Faculty of Technology, plenty of developments and innovations related to higher education technology will become even more evident for the city as a result.

In his speech, Ivar Manuel, Executive Board member for the district Amsterdam Oost (East), referred to the Conrad building as the ‘crown jewel of the Amstel Campus’. He also addressed the initial concerns voiced by the neighbourhood about the Amstel Campus expansion, emphasising that the campus brings tremendous added value to the development of the Amsterdam Oost district.

The Conrad building is being developed by ‘Combinatie Conradhuis’, which includes various parties: De Nijs, Unica en Visser & Smit Bouw and spans some 25.000 m2 (gross surface area). The planning is for the Conrad building to open its doors in September 2021.

Students, faculties, the municipality, neighbours and the contractor symbolically struck the first pile using an antique pile driver.
