AUAS student Elijah Alvares has been appointed as the new student assessor at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS), effective 1 August 2020.

The student assessor is appointed by the AUAS Executive Board and is tasked with representing the ideas and opinions of students and advising the Board on issues raised during meetings. The selection committee for this role included the Supervisory Board, Executive Board and the Central Representative Advisory Council (CMR). Alvares is the fourth student assessor appointed at the AUAS. He follows in the footsteps of Marco Kloek, Ruben Neuhaus and Oumaima el Hammouti. The appointment is for a period of one year.

Social issues

Elijah Alvares is about to being his third year in the AUAS programme Public administration and government management (Faculty of Applied Social Sciences and Law, FMR). In the academic year 2019-2020 he was a member of the executive board of the student association BSKA and also involved as a student assistant on the AUAS Advisory Board. He previously worked as a teaching assistant at a school in Diemen and was a member of the city council in Amsterdam-Noord. The themes that Alvares wants to focus on in the coming year include inclusion, student welfare, as well as promoting more cross-collaboration between the different parts of our organisation. This aligns well with the objectives of the AUAS.

Passion for education

Executive Board Vice Chair Hanneke Reuling is enthusiastic about his appointment. "During the proceedings Elijah showed his great passion for education, our students and the city of Amsterdam. We are confident that he will be able to forge further connections within the AUAS, even in the midst of the exceptional circumstances we’re facing given the current health crisis and all the associated uncertainties. I am looking forward to working together”.

Attention and determination

Elijah looks forward to starting his new position: "I'm looking forward to next year as a student assessor! It is an important role within the AUAS and I am aware of that. I will devote my full attention and determination to this role. I will try to seek out students as much as possible, but don't hesitate to come to me. Soso lobi!*”
