Jopie Nooren new Chair of the AUAS Executive Board

Jopie Nooren will become the new Chair of the Executive Board at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS), effective 1 March 2021. She was appointed by the Supervisory Board last Friday. She succeeds Huib de Jong, who retired in September.

J.E.A.M. (Jopie) Nooren (Breda, 1961) is an experienced director with an impressive track record in the public sector. She is currently at the helm of Bartiméus, national expertise organisation for the visually impaired. In addition to this, she is the First Vice President of the Senate of the Netherlands. In this senator role she is a spokesperson concerning the dossiers secondary education and higher education. Jopie Nooren will resign as a senator prior to officially joining the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.

After studying Occupational Therapy at Heerlen University of Applied Sciences and Health Policy and Management at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), Jopie Nooren worked as an academic staff member and university lecturer at the EUR. This was followed by positions at Zorgverzekeraars Nederland (an umbrella organisation for Dutch health insurers) and a director role at the Association for Disability Care Netherlands (VGN). She subsequently joined the board of directors of the Lunet Zorg healthcare institution in Eindhoven. In her current position at Bartiméus, she has served as chair of the board of directors since 2013.

Jopie Nooren is very pleased with her appointment: "Using my knowledge and experience to enable others to flourish is a recurring theme in my career. I am impressed by the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and am eager to further develop the connection between education, research and professional practice".

The Supervisory Board is likewise pleased to welcome Jopie Nooren as the new chairperson. The Supervisory Board sees her as a connector who is engaged, open and very analytical. She is enthusiastic about the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences as a knowledge institution and about the interconnectedness of education, research and practice. Her time at Bartiméus saw her become well acquainted with this ‘triangle’ and she is knowledgeable about how it can function successfully. She is a very experienced director with a strong political and professional network. These are among the reasons that the Supervisory Board views her as an excellent person to fill the position of Executive Board Chair.

This appointment by the Supervisory Board follows a recommendation by the appointments committee and comes after unanimously positive discussions within the AUAS. These discussions were held with the Central Representative Advisory Council, the Deans, and Executive Board members Geleyn Meijer and Hanneke Reuling.

Hanneke Reuling will continue to serve in her role as Interim Chair of the Executive Board until 1 March 2021.
