compensation, unemployment and farewell

When you leave the employ of AUAS, you may be entitled to a transition payment and unemployment benefit. And how can you bid farewell to your colleagues and AUAS?

Employees have a right to a transition payment in the event of dismissal. This right also applies if a temporary contract is not renewed. This is meant as compensation for the dismissal and to ease the transition to a new job. You are entitled to a transition payment if your employment contract was terminated at AUAS’ initiative.

The method for calculating the transition payment changed on 1 January 2020 with the introduction of the Balanced Labour Market Act. With effect from 1 January 2020, all employees have a right to a transition payment as from the first day of employment.

For more information, go to Government of the Netherlands - transition payment (Dutch).

The level of the transition payment depends on your monthly salary and the number of years you were employed by AUAS. The transition payment is calculated as follows:

  1. You receive 1/3 of the monthly salary per whole year of service as from your first working day.
  2. The transition payment in respect of the remaining portion of the employment contract is calculated according to the following formula: (gross salary received in respect of the remaining portion of the employment contract / gross monthly salary) x (1/3 of the gross monthly salary / 12)
This formula is also used for calculating the transition payment if the employment contract was in effect for less than one year.

The Personnel and Salary Administration of the Administration Centre will check whether you are entitled to this payment. If so, then this is included in the final statement. You can find the payment on your payslip.

If you bid farewell to AUAS, that will of course be observed in an appropriate way. Depending on the term of the employment contract, you will be given a gift, a meal or, if you prefer, a farewell reception. You will reach agreements with your supervisor/manager about this.

Guidelines for gifts and/or receptions

If you have been employed by AUAS for four years or less, you will receive a gift from your faculty, staff department or unit. If you have been employed by AUAS for five years or more, you can choose between a gift or a meal or you can choose to hold a farewell reception.

As rule of thumb, the amount spent on the gift will be around €25 per year you were employed by AUAS up to a maximum of €500. If you receive a cash gift, you must include a signed statement with the expense claim stating that you have received this amount.

A farewell reception will in principle take place at the workplace. If an external location is chosen, the expenses may be claimed. If you do not want to hold a reception, the associated amount will not be paid out to you.

When a faculty, staff or unit director leaves AUAS, consultation must take place with the Executive Board secretary.

The costs for the farewell are borne by the faculty, staff department or unit to which the employee belongs.

After being dismissed, you will of course want to start working again as quickly as possible. If, after some time, you have not yet succeeded in finding a new job, you may have a right to unemployment benefit (WW).

AUAS will support you in this process. Under certain conditions, AUAS may also initiate a personal rehabilitation programme.

Assistance in finding another job

You are personally responsible for finding another job. Together with your supervisor/manager and/or HR advisor, you will discuss your opportunities and possibilities for finding a new job and how you can best be assisted in that process.

If your employment contract is terminated, you have not yet found a new job (and you are not expected to succeed in doing so within three months’ time) and you are entitled to unemployment benefit for more than six months, you will be eligible to receive rehabilitation assistance from an external party. Your supervisor or HR will see to it that you are registered with a rehabilitation agency and will inform you of the procedure.

Unemployment benefit

If your temporary or permanent employment contract or the temporary expansion of your employment contract is terminated, you may be entitled to unemployment benefit (WW-uitkering) under certain conditions. In addition, you will also usually receive a supplement over and above the statutory entitlement in addition to your unemployment benefit because you are employed in higher professional education. The unemployment benefit over and above the statutory entitlement is regulated in the Universities of Applied Sciences Enhanced Unemployment Scheme, the BWRHBO (Dutch). For more information, go to HBO rehabilitation manual - unemployment (Dutch).

Go to www.uwv.nl (Dutch) to find out when you are entitled to unemployment benefit, how and when to apply for unemployment benefit, what the level and duration may be of your unemployment benefit and much more. The unemployment benefit is granted and paid out by the UWV.

Go to Mijn Uitkering - Visma Idella (visma-idella.nl) (Dutch) to find information about and apply for unemployment benefit over and above the statutory entitlement. This is only possible after you have been granted unemployment benefit by the UWV. The unemployment benefit over and above the statutory entitlement is granted and paid out by APG.
