Application procedure

Step by step

After you have been admitted to an AUAS programme, either as an exchange student or degree seeking student, you will receive an email with an invitation to the online application system for student housing. Respond to this invitation as quickly as possible! There may not be enough rooms to meet the demand.

Check your email

It is important to check your inbox and spam regularly, because the link to the housing application form will be sent to you by email. On this application form you can indicate your preference for the type of room and price category. It is not possible to indicate your preference for a location or specific building.   

Please keep in mind that most of the international students will receive an invitation, but this is not always the case. You can check with studenthousing@hva.nl if you are eligible for AUAS student housing.

When will this email arrive?

The exact timing depends on your faculty or study programme, but as a rule:

  • In May (for programmes starting in September)
  • In November (for programmes starting in February)

Register with other housing websites

AUAS student housing is available for a maximum of one year.

If you decide to stay in Amsterdam for longer than one year, we strongly advise you to register on Studentenwoningweb.nl and Room.nl as early as possible, as these are waiting time based platforms. Another option is finding housing independently.

Clicking on the link in the invitation email will take you to our online application form. In addition to your personal information, you will be asked:

  • Budget category: choose the category that fits your budget. This will determine the types of rooms available to you. Explore the budget categories.
  • Living together: tell us if you want to live with a friend (shared) or partner (couple) as there are only a few rooms available for this purpose. Explore the different room types.
  • Other information that is relevant to assigning you an appropriate room.

Requesting a specific housing provider, location or building is unfortunately not possible.

Disabilities & medical condition

If you have special housing needs because of a disability, please upload a medical statement in the application form and contact studenthousing@hva.nl to specify your needs.

Application deadlines

The Early Bird deadline for the 2019-2020 academic year (2nd semester, start in February):

  • 8 November 2019

The Early Bird deadline for the 2020-2021 academic year (start in September):

  • 8 June 2020 

You are welcome to apply after the early bird deadline, but your chances of getting a room will be small then. The AUAS housing fee is also higher after this deadline.

Once you have completed the form, follow the instructions for paying the AUAS housing fee.

After submitting your application, check your email daily (after the Early Bird deadline) to find out if you have been selected for student housing at one of the housing providers we work with. This can take some time. This email will come from a housing provider, not from the AUAS, so check your spam box as well.

  • If you receive a room offer, follow the instructions in the email to confirm. (You cannot change the room or location offered.)
  • Please note: you will only get one chance to reserve a room. If you miss this offer, you will be put back at the end of the waiting list.
  • If you are not offered a room because student housing is already full, you will be added to a waiting list. There is a chance you will be offered a room at a later date, but in the meantime we recommend you look at the tips for finding housing independently.
  • If you find a place to live, inform us immediately on studenthousing@hva.nl so that we can remove you from the waiting list and refund the AUAS housing fee.


Deadline to respond

Make sure you respond immediately (or as soon as you can) to the room offer! If you fail to respond by the given date, you may lose the room. The AUAS housing fee will not be refunded in this case.

Your room reservation is confirmed once you make your first payment to the housing provider. Instructions for making this payment are included in the email you receive from one of the housing providers. Please note that:

  • Room reservations are final. You cannot change rooms after you have made the reservation.
  • Cancelling a reserved room means you are no longer interested in AUAS student housing. You will not be offered another room.

For new international AUAS students, we offer a pick-up service on specific arrival days, from Schiphol Amsterdam Airport to Amsterdam, with full service and an official welcome. These Arrival Days are organized in cooperation with our housing partners. There are two arrival days in August and one in January.

If you do not arrive on one of these dates, you need to arrange tranportation to the office of your housing corporation by yourself to finalize your registration and collect your keys.
