2020-2021

After you have registered for an AUAS programme (exchange/bachelor/master), and if you are eligible for housing, you will automatically receive an email inviting you to apply online for student housing.

When will the housing invitation arrive for the study year 2020-2021 ?

For bachelor/master programmes starting in September:

  • The email to students with the housing procedure and link to our housing registration form was originally scheduled for Monday 8 June 2020. Due to the global coronacrisis, this was delayed.

  • New date housing invitation: Wednesday 17 June 2020

Exchange students semester 1 2020-2021: *CANCELLED*

  • Unfortunately, all inbound exchange programs for Fall 2020 have been cancelled or will take place online only. Exchange students will not receive a housing invitation. Please refer to the AUAS coronavirus information page for more information. 

Please note: All international students who are eligible for housing, will receive an invitation for housing. Receiving this housing invitation does not mean that you have been (conditionally) admitted to your study program or that your study enrollment is approved. The housing department has no information about your study program admission progress.

Respond to the housing invitation as quickly as possible! Rooms are limited, so it is important to act fast. Apply right away: do not to wait until your study enrollment has been finalised or your visa procedure approved. If you wait it might be too late to secure housing through the AUAS. 

The following 7 steps are important if you want to arrange housing through the AUAS housing service:

Housing application 2020-2021 cancellation policy

Students who apply for international student housing for 2020-2021 can cancel their housing application due the uncertainties caused by the coronavirus until July 14th 2020. The AUAS housing fee will be fully refunded.

If you already received (and accepted) your housing offer, most payments you made to the housing providers (first rent/deposit) will also be refunded if you cancel before the July 14th 2020 deadline. After July 14th 2020, we will continue with our regular housing process.

 

Availability of rooms next semester

At the moment it will only be possible to apply for housing with rental contracts starting on August 14th 2020, for 2 semesters. it will not be possible now to apply for only the second semester (starting February 2021).  

Students who do not need housing now, do not need to apply for International Student Housing, even if you have received an invitation. Later in the semester more information will be communicated about the procedure for students who have already started their study program, but will be arriving later in the semester or in the next semester.

Regarding the current situation it remains highly uncertain how many students will arrive in the Netherlands for the start of the academic year in September 2020 and/or in semester 2 in February 2021. This means that the International Student Housing Office cannot give any guarantees if enough rooms will be available when you decide to come to Amsterdam later in the semester or in semester 2 (February 2021). There even might be a shortage of rooms in semester 2. We look at the situation every day and supplement the information on this page as far as is possible, but we do not expect to have more information before October/November 2020.

Availability of rooms during the semester

We understand that you might like to stay in your home country a bit longer until the global corona crisis is more stable. Unfortunately we can only offer semester contracts, starting August 14th 2020 until January 25th 2021 or until summer 2021. We cannot offer any rental contracts with a later start date and it is not possible to get reduced fees for late arrival.

AUAS Housing is meant as a 'soft landing' in the Netherlands. This way, students who have just arrived and do not know the Netherlands yet, instantly have a place to stay.

You are eligible for our housing service when:

  • You are an international student starting your first year of a full time English-taught* degree programme (bachelor/master) and
  • You did not receive housing through the AUAS or Oncampus in the past
  • You currently do not live in the Netherlands 

*Please contact us if you are an international student starting a Dutch-taught degree programme. We cannot guarantee housing for you but we will try to assist you, depending on availability.

If you meet the conditions above, you will automatically receive an invitation to our housing portal. If your situation is different, you can check with housing@hva.nl to find out if you are eligible for AUAS student housing.

Check your email

You will receive an email from myinfo@hva.nl on the email address you provided in your study application in Studielink.nl. We recommend to add myinfo@hva.nl to your 'safe senders' list of your email account. myinfo@uva.nl is a 'no-reply' email address.

You will find a link to the housing application form in the email of  June 17th 2020. 

The speed with which you submit the application form, will determine your position of entry in our records. In other words, the applications are handled in the order in which they are received. Only after you have finalized your application, you will be considered eligible for a room. To find out exactly what you need to do, check our housing website thoroughly for the procedure and how to finalize your application. 


Register with other housing websites

AUAS student housing is available for a maximum of one year.

If you decide to stay in Amsterdam for longer than one year, we strongly advise you to register also already on Studentenwoningweb.nl and Room.nl. These platforms work with a waiting list. 

Clicking on the link in the invitation email will take you to our online application form.

Accessing the application form with your AUAS-ID

You should have received your AUAS-ID in a separate email. You need to activate your AUAS-ID first before you can access the housing application form. Please contact csa@hva.nl or housing@hva.nl if you have not received this.

In the application form you will be asked to choose a monthly budget category. Base your choice on the information about budget categories, room types, other housing costs and the cost of living in Amsterdam.

Requesting a specific housing provider, location or building is unfortunately not possible.

Application deadlines

You need to apply as soon as possible, as we work on a first come, first served basis.

Your chances of receiving a room offer will significantly decrease the longer you wait. Apply right away: do not to wait until your study enrollment has been finalised or your visa procedure approved. If you wait it might be too late to secure housing through the AUAS.

Once you have completed the form, you will automatically be sent to the online payment page. Follow the instructions for paying the AUAS housing fee. You can pay in euros by either a credit card or by PayPal. Other payment methods are unfortunately not possible.

After submitting your housing application and paying the AUAS fee, check your email daily to find out if you have been selected for student housing at one of our housing partners. This can take some time. Once you have been selected, you will first receive a message from myinfo@hva.nl. After that, you will receive an offer from either booking platform ROOM.nl or one of our other housing providers, to book a room within a given time frame. Check your spam folder!

It can take several days to a few weeks before you will receive a room offer, as this process is quite extensive. Therefore, not all students will receive a room offer on the same day, nor will it necessarily be in the same order as students applied. However, once you received the offer, it is important to proceed with step 6 as soon as possible.

Rooms available for max. 1 semester

Since all AUAS exchange programs have been cancelled due to the corona virus, we have extra rooms available for the duration of 1 semester. These rooms are offered with an end date of  January 25th 2021. If you decide to book one of these rooms, the AUAS housing fee of the second semester ( € 195) will be refunded automatically as we cannot provide you with a room after January 25th 2021. You can expect the refund of the second semester fee 6 weeks after the start date of your rental contract.

Be aware that there are unfortunately not enough rooms available for 2 semesters due to the housing shortage. This means that it is likely some of you will not have the option to choose an accommodation for 2 semesters if these rooms are already fully booked.


Deadline to respond

  • If you receive a room offer, follow the instructions to confirm (you cannot change the room or location offered).
  • You will be given a very short time frame of a few days to book your room. Make sure you respond immediately or as soon as you can to the room offer! If you fail to respond by the given date, you may lose the room. The AUAS housing fee will not be refunded in this case.
  • Be aware that many students are booking a room at the same time. So the availability can decline rapidly, even in the given booking time frame.
  • You will only get one chance to reserve a room. If you miss this offer, you will be put back at the end of the waiting list.

Your room reservation is confirmed once you make your first payment to the housing provider. Instructions for making this payment will be provided by the housing partner. This initial payment can be a significant amount of money, as it will include administration costs, the first month's rent, and often a deposit

Please note that:

  • Room reservations are final. You cannot change rooms after you have made the reservation.
  • If you cancel a reserved room we will assume you are no longer interested in AUAS student housing. You will not be offered another room.

Normally, we offer a pick-up service on specific arrival days from Schiphol Amsterdam Airport to Amsterdam, with full service and an official welcome. Due to the corona measures in the Netherlands, we unfortunately cannot organise this service. 

Off course, we would still like to give our new international students a warm welcome. We are looking into the possibility of offering several services online to ensure a soft landing in Amsterdam. We will provide more information as soon as the current situation allows us to.

What happens if I don’t get a room offer?

If you are not offered a room because student housing is already full, your name will be added to a waiting list. There is a chance you will be offered a room at a later date, but in the meantime we recommend you look at the tips for finding housing independently.

Available rooms will be offered to students on the waiting list, but not all applicants exercise their option to book their room or cancel their room. The room will then be offered to the next match on the waiting list. This means the waiting list remains open, so that rooms might become available again.

How do I know where I am on the waiting list?

We can't give your exact place on it, as there are several factors:

  • Time on the waiting list
  • Budget category
  • 1 or 2 semester rental period
  • Gender (accommodations with roommates)
  • Availability of rooms

What can I do while on the waiting list?

Keep looking, and if you find a place by yourself, contact housing@hva.nl immediately so we can remove you from the waiting list and refund the AUAS housing fee.
