Programme structure

Each of the 4 years of Sport Studies - track ISMB revolves around a central theme related to the international world of sport. In the first year, the core subjects and activities focus on orientation in the world of sports, business, and event management.

 Key sport areas

The Sport Studies - track ISMB programme is designed to expand your understanding of relevant theories and build practical skills in 3 key areas of the sports industry:

  • Sport Commerce: focuses on the business surrounding sports industry, paying special attention to the sporting goods industry, spectators, and sport as entertainment. Many practical business aspects play a role in this, including finance, economics, sales, and marketing.
  • High Performance Sport: examines the most exclusive side of the sports world with a focus on the athlete. You’ll gain new insights into the events, organisations and structures surrounding these high-performance competitors, as well as cover subjects such as sport media and the legal aspects of sport.
  • Sport Development: takes a more inclusive look at the sports world with a focus on participation. You’ll learn more about topics such as intercultural communication, facility management and the role of sport, recreation, and fitness in society.

Sport skills

Our students practice sports actively, so a general ‘sportiness’ is certainly required, but you don't need to be a professional athlete by any means. Due to the variety in the sports we practice, you're always better at one sport than at another (dancers tend to not like football so much and footballers tend to not enjoy dancing, for example). The point is never to excel at the sport itself. The triathlon for example, is a challenge for most, but you don't do it right-away. You train for 7 weeks. As with all the sports in the curriculum, we use the triathlon to learn management skills, in this case goal setting and getting out of your comfort zone.

Year 1

The first year starts with an introduction to sport management and general subjects that will prepare you for the rest of your study. You’ll also get to opportunity to participate in 2 international field trips in Europe. In the second semester you’ll focus intensively on event management. Throughout the year, you’ll also practice a range of sports to learn specific management skills and expand your knowledge of a wide range of sports.
