Running from April-May 2022, this Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) will offer a select group of students and lecturers the chance to join an international experience. The programme consists of a week-long trip abroad, combined with virtual meetings and joint collaboration and projects. The on-campus sprint, which wraps up the programme, will be hosted by Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki, Finland (pending Covid-19 restrictions).

The programme

Focusing on urban commons and urban development, this multidisciplinary blended course covers multiple subjects, including urban planning, urban governance, architecture and civil engineering. It is part of U!REKA consortium’s Urban Commons Lab, which involves six of the seven U!REKA universities of applied sciences across Europe.

The BIP Students participating in the programme will earn at least 3 ECTS.

The central theme is Urban Commons and City Development. During the lectures, you will learn the philosophy, organization, design principles and theory of urban commons. Students investigate commoning initiatives in their own city/country and present them virtually to the other students.

During the 5-day study week in Helsinki, students work on an assignment in mixed multinational groups. The final products are presented to the clients and are part of an exhibition. The course is affiliated with the UN sustainable development goals.

View this presentation for more information on the programme.

What will participants gain?

In addition to the 3 ECTS, students will gain a rich, international experience through the intensive exchange and cooperation with students from other European universities of applied sciences. You’ll learn more about the current, future-oriented commons concept and how to apply it to issues related to urban development.

The blended module begins on 11 April and the programme ends on 7 May 2022. Students will participate in a collaborative online exchange programme involving the four institutions for 2 to 3 weeks, which will include webinars, literature review and assignments, and an intensive 5-day visit to Helsinki.
