The Dutch food adventure

You have just arrived in Amsterdam and want to try some of the local food the Dutch kitchen has to offer. There are just two problems, 1. You don’t have any money, and 2. You don’t know what to get. Fear not! This quick guide will help you to get started on your own Dutch food adventure.

Stroopwafels are a traditional Dutch snack, and a delicious one!

FEBO

When you walk around Amsterdam, you will come across a food chain called FEBO. What sticks out here, is the “cabinets” full of food.

You simply walk over to these big glass walls and choose what you want to eat. This includes “Krokets”, a small breadcrumbed fried food roll containing ground meat, and “Kaassoufflé”, which is basically deep fried cheese.

This is a cheap way to taste some of the Dutch snacks, and it is a great way to satisfy your greatest hunger.

Stroopwafels

The stroopwafel is a traditional Dutch snack, literally translating to “Syrup Waffel”. It is a waffle made from two layers of baked dough with a caramel syrup filling the middle. It is a delicious sweet snack, and goes well with a cup of coffee!

You can get the stroopwafels from almost every supermarket, but if you want to get some of the great ones, you have to go to one of the stores that make them fresh.

Here they serve them with all kinds of extra fillings, like chocolate, marshmallows or peanut butter. Everything your heart desires, or at least your sweet tooth!

In the fast-food chain, FEBO, you can get food from cabinets.

Beer (Heineken)

hen your belly is full and you are ready to go home, the perfect way to end the day is by enjoying a cold Heineken beer!

The Heineken beer is a traditional Dutch beer, and the brewery was founded in 1873. You may be familiar with this beer since you can get it almost everywhere in the world.

Heineken beers are sold everywhere in Amsterdam, so it is up to you if you want to go to a bar and get it from the tap or rather enjoy a cold can in the sun. No matter what, it is a great way to finish the day after you have tasted all the crazy and wonderful food Amsterdam has to offer.

Here’s a little quote I overheard from a Dutch classmate. Whenever the weekend is coming he says: “I'm going to drink a green hop-smoothie”.

A cold beer at the “grachten” is a perfect way to end the day.
