Guided City walk: Amsterdam in the 17th century - A melting pot of cultures

In this city walk, we take a look at the society of Amsterdam in the 17th century. In this century, Amsterdam had become the economic heart of Europe. The city grew from around 60,000 people in 1600 to around 220,000 in 1700. The city was overrun by immigrants who came from all corners of Europe. Some of them were political refugees, people who had to leave their own country because of their religion. Others were economic refugees who came to the metropolis of Amsterdam in search of a better life. Thus Amsterdam became a melting pot of people, cultures and religions. The newcomers ensured spectacular economic growth, but as expected, there were also problems between the indigenous inhabitants and these newcomers. Nevertheless, diversity was the key to the success of the 17th century.
