Netflix and explore?

The challenge of being a local in a new city. How to get to know every corner of it and all the activities it offers, without falling into the habit of day to day life and stay at home watching Netflix?

The City.

Amsterdam is a city full of different activities to do. Here you have plenty of bars, clubs, fairs, festivals, rooftops, food events, parks, restaurants, shops, museums, 160 canals, and much more. In my personal experience, when I first came I found there were a lot of things I wanted to do, but at the same time, a lot of time to do it, so at first I started postponing things and saying “maybe I can do it next week”, “today the weather is not that nice, maybe other day” and like this, days, weeks and months start to pass by and then I realized that actually I didn’t have that much time.

In this city, most of the time it rains and is cold, but this should not keep you from doing all the things you want. So, as not to fall in this circle, I started doing what I should have done since the beginning and getting to know new places. If it rains, you use an umbrella, if it’s cold, you wear a jacket, and if it’s warm and sunny, you wear your smile and go enjoy the city.

What if you don’t know what to do or where to go? Let me tell you that, no matter the weather or the time of the year, there are a lot of things you will find interesting. What I usually do, is search on the Facebook events where there are plenty of different categories of activities and you can also see the ones your friends like. Advice from the people you know on which places to visit or not to is always good. So if you don’t know what to do, you can just ask. Getting the Holland Pass is a good idea to go to museums, access discounts and travel to other places throw Holland. The I Amsterdam web site has a complete guide of activities in the city. And also, the bike is one of the best assets one has to explore new places. You can just gather your friends and bike through the city, get to know the parks and go easily from one place to another.

Biking through Amsterdam.

Last but not least, there are plenty of other cities worth being explored in the Netherlands as Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague and Eindhoven, Maastricht, between others, where you can go by train or bus.

So start to look up all the places where you will go when in Amsterdam!

Here, a top 10 of the activities in and around Amsterdam:
1. Party and bars: Leidseplein is an area where most of the clubs and bars are located so it´s always a good option to go there. Apart from that, some places worth visiting are Thiusheaven, De School and Sugarfactory. In the DJ Guide site, you can find also a party agenda for Amsterdam.
2. Rooftops: Sky Lounge and HOPP Amsterdam. Really recommended to enjoy the sunset.
3. Music Festivals: The Flying Dutch, Kingsland and Mysteryland.
4. Districts: The Pijp and Jordaan are two of the most visited districts where you can find markets (The Albert Cuyp Market), bars and restaurants.
5. Tulip Field: Keukenhof . During April and May I would not hesitate to go visit this beautiful tulip field on the outskirts of Amsterdam.
6. Parks: Vondelpark, Rembrandtpark, Amstelpark and Oosterpark. If the weather is nice, this is the best plan to do.
7. Boat Party. There are a lot of offers you can choose from as to explore the canals with friends and see the city from another perspective, while enjoying good music and drinks.
8. Nice places where to eat: Foodhallen , The Avocado Show, Bulls and Dogs and Blue Amsterdam.
9. Markets: Flower Market, The Albert Cuyp Market and Waterlooplein Market.
10. Museums: Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum and Anne Frank Huis, NEMO and Moco Museum.
