Digital security during studies: 10 golden rules
To help you ensure digital security during your studies, follow the 10 ‘golden rules’ listed below.
- Make sure to have good basic security. At the very minimum, this means: antivirus software, a firewall and the most recent software updates.
- Never leave your computer, laptop or tablet unattended. Lock your screen whenever you have to be away from it for any length of time. On a Windows OS, press the Ctrl-Alt-Delete or Windows key +L(ock) keyboard shortcuts.
- Create a unique, strong password for your AUAS ID and never share it with others.
- Change your password at least once a year.
- Watch out for phishing and ransomware (spam). Learn to recognise suspicious emails before it's too late, using these tips.
- Always use AUAS´s central storage services (AUAS network and MyAUAS to securely store documents, data and personal details. Do you still wish to save important or confidential data on your laptop, a USB memory stick or in the cloud? If so, you are personally responsible for back-ups and secure USB sticks or encrypting your files before you save them in the cloud.
- Secure your mobile telephone and tablet.
- Whenever using open WiFi networks (in the train, cafés, etc.) always use a secure connection via apps.hva.nl. Without a secure connection, others can track your every move! Do you use WiFi inside AUAS buildings? Choose one of the secure networks – either eduroam or hva.
- Adhere to the ICT Code of Conduct that applies to the AUAS.
- Have you experienced an ICT security breach? Immediately contact the ICT Service Desk via servicedesk-icts@hva.nl or on 020-595 1402.
