Proof of financial means for living expenses

For the immigration procedure you need to fulfill certain requirements set by the Dutch Government. One of these requirements is the proof of financial means for living expenses.

WHAT IS THE PROOF OF FINANCIAL MEANS FOR LIVING EXPENSES?

The Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) requires that you have sufficient financial means to cover your stay in the Netherlands. The required minimum amount set by the IND is €950 a month. Students who come to AUAS for one semester need to show that they have sufficient financial resources for a period of seven months. Please keep in mind that you need to demonstrate this requirement every academic year. This is only applicable for students studying more than one year.

  • The Proof of Financial means for living expenses for one semester: €6.650.
  • The Proof of Financial Means for living expenses for one academic year/2 semesters: is €11.400.

Please note that we strongly advise students in these uncertain times to bring enough money (besides the required amount proof of financial means for living expenses set by the IND) with you to sustain yourself in the first two months after arrival, since it can take some time to open a Dutch bank account.

Studying longer than one year? Please keep in mind that you need to demonstrate your proof of financial means for living expenses + full tuition fee amount every academic year.

HOW TO PROVIDE YOUR PROOF OF FINANCIAL MEANS FOR LIVING EXPENSES?

There are two ways to prove your financial means for living expenses. You can choose which option is most suitable or convenient for you. If the requirements are not met we can not accept the proof of financial means for living expenses.

The first option is to transfer the required amount directly into our bank account. You will receive a refund of the amount in the first month of your study programme.

If you choose this option, please write in the reference: "AUAS VVR + your full name (last name, first name) + your date of birth (dd-mm-yyyy).” This is the only way we can locate your payment(s). Make sure that you indicate that you will pay for all the international transaction costs. If you fail to do so you need to transfer the remaining amount separately!

In the first two weeks of September* (after the start of your study programme) we will send you a refund form. After we received this form filled in, it will take between 10-20 working days before you will receive the money into your account. We cannot speed up this process, so take enough money with you to sustain yourself in the first two months after arrival.

For students with a UK bank: our experience has shown that banks from the UK often charge a lot of money. If the amount on the refund seems lower than expected it may be due to the usual conversion rate and your bank charges (the conversion from euro to British pounds is done by the recipient's bank). We therefore strongly advise all students to open a Dutch bank account to avoid these fees.

*Should you start in Spring Semester you will receive the refund form the first two weeks of February.

Option 2 is providing the proof of financial for living expenses means through a scholarship or grant.

Please keep in mind that student loan(s) will not be accepted as part of your proof of financial means.

A correct scholarship declaration must show:

  • The date;
  • The institution granting the scholarship;
  • Your personal details (initials, surname and date of birth);
  • The start and finish of the scholarship (start and end date);
  • The amount you receive;
  • The name of the scholarship programme;
  • For students that will follow an AUAS bachelor or master, read and fulfill the additional information below this page as well.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS THAT WILL FOLLOW AN AUAS BACHELOR OR MASTER

This information is not applicable for exchange students. The IND needs to check that you have enough money to cover your tuition fee and proof of financial means for living expenses. This means that you cannot pay your tuition fee from the proof of the financial means for living expenses amount. If you are obliged to use option 1 ‘transfer’, this will not be a problem, but for option 2 you need to take the following into account:

  1. First transfer the total tuition fee and IND fee to our AUAS account.
  2. The date of your scholarship letter needs to be later than the date of your transfer of the tuition fee and IND fee.
