Dr R.B.P.M. Busser (Rogier)
Dean of AMSIB
Career Profile
My most recent position in which I am leaving is as Programme Director for IBMS at The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS). I live in The Hague with my wife and son, and my daughters are already out of the house.
After my studies at Leiden University and Kyoto University (Asian Studies and Economics), I worked as a lecturer and researcher at Leiden University. My academic interest in combining Asian studies and Economics started with research in the field of industrial organization in Japan. With the internationalization of the Japanese economy, my interest shifted to understanding how Japanese organizational models and investments influenced the host countries' economic structures and enterprises. Subsequently, I became increasingly interested in the role of businesses in developing economies and I currently study the long-term economic developmental processes in Japan, South-Korea, China and Thailand.
Sharing and discussing research insights and ideas with international groups of students is what drives me as a teacher. Being a visiting professor to Thammasat University in Bangkok and Beijing Foreign Studies University, gives me the opportunity to engage with, and learn from students in different countries. Apart from teaching and research, I have acted in several administrative positions such as director international relations (Faculty of Humanities Leiden), managing director of the Leiden University College in the Hague and the last four years I served as programme director of the International Business Programme at THUAS. This gave me the opportunity to learn the differences between a research university and a university of applied sciences.
