About Jan-Willem van der Roest

Jan-Willem van der Roest is a professor of Sport Management & Sport Business at the AUAS. His research focuses on the changing role of sport organisations and sport policy in society, with a specific focus on sustainability, innovation and entrepreneurship in the sport sector. He investigates how sport organisations can adapt to social developments and how new business models contribute to a future-proof sports sector.

As a lecturer, Jan-Willem is active in various study programmes. He is part of the management team of Sportkunde - leerroute Sport, Management & Ondernemen (SM&O), Sport Studies - track International Sports, Management and Business (ISMB), and the Master Sport Business & Leadership.

Jan-Willem has a broad academic and professional background in sports management and policy. He obtained his PhD at Utrecht University, where he conducted research into the impact of social trends on local sports clubs. After his PhD, he worked as a university lecturer and researcher at various knowledge institutions, such as Utrecht University, the Mulier Institute and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. Here he worked closely with policy makers and sports organisations to translate scientific insights into practice.
