About Marike van der Schaaf
Marike van der Schaaf is a professor by special appointment of Rehabilitation in Acute Care at the AUAS and a senior lecturer at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Amsterdam UMC. She investigates the consequences of illness and hospitalisation and develops rehabilitation treatments to prevent these consequences as much as possible. Marike is very passionate in her efforts to improve the quality of life of (former) ICU patients.
In 1991, Marike obtained her Bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy from the HvA. She then worked as a physiotherapist in inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation of hospital patients. In 2004, Marike completed training as a clinical epidemiologist at the university's Master's programme in Evidence Based Practice (cum laude).
In 2009, Marike obtained her PhD from the University of Amsterdam on the topic Functional Recovery of ICU patients. In 2016, Marike delivered her inaugural speech titled 'Care for the Quality of Survival of Hospital Patients with a Complex Care Need'.
