The year begins with good news: over the next two years, the Civic Interaction Design research group will be collaborating with IDFA DocLab on the Shared Realities project. This international research and creative project focuses on the question of how immersive experiences can be made more sustainable, accessible and meaningful for a wide audience.

The project is supported by the Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie (opens in new window), part of the National Growth Fund Programme of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science in the field of Immersive Experiences (IX).

Research concerning audience, impact and accessibility

Within Shared Realities, IDFA DocLab collaborates with immersive experience creators, producers, and researchers from various institutions. The Civic Interaction Design research group contributes content based on research into audience perception, interaction, accessibility, and the social impact of immersive media.

The shared goal is not only to make immersive art forms technologically innovative, but also to better tailor them to diverse audience groups – bringing creators and audiences closer together.

Creators, partners and international cooperation

The project is led by IDFA DocLab (opens in new window), with production by POPKRAFT and artistic contributions from Dutch creators such as Ado Ato Pictures (Tamara Shogaolu), Ali Eslami / ALLLESSS, Polymorf, Studio Biarritz and WeMakeVR.com.

In addition, the programme is supported by exhibition and distribution partners ARTIS – Planetarium, Nu:Reality and IMM-PACT, and there is international research collaboration with the MIT Open Documentary Lab.  (opens in new window)

Immersive experiences with public value

With Shared Realities, IDFA DocLab, researchers, creators and partners are taking the next step in developing immersive experiences that are not only artistically and technologically innovative, but also sustainable, inclusive and socially relevant.

Over the next two years, researchers, creators and partners will work together on new insights, prototypes and presentations that contribute to the future of immersive storytelling.
