Transitions: Towards Change in the Polluting Fashion Industry

Project
-

The project achieves this by developing new learning methods and tools to help students, young designers, and professionals tackle the real, everyday challenges of the green transition. This project is funded by Erasmus+.

Fashion and textiles represent the second most polluting industry worldwide. Due to European regulations, the textile sector must become fully circular by 2050. As a result, the industry faces major challenges that require a fundamental and radical system transformation. Transitions is a strategic alliance of universities, colleges, platforms, and institutes working together to support the textile and fashion industry in transitioning towards a more sustainable and circular system.

Education

The modular training program developed by the Transitions project can be integrated into existing programs at HvA. With a focus on real-world situations and challenges through Transition Labs, the project aligns with HvA's education model, which emphasizes practice-based research and industry collaboration.

By participating in a strategic alliance like Transitions, HvA can further expand its network and connect students with leading companies, research institutes, and universities.

Expected Outcomes

  • Establishing a modular training program based on Industry 4.0 to support a new circular system for the fashion and textile industry.
  • Developing innovation-driven training modules focused on real-world challenges (Transition Labs) to reskill and upskill students and professionals.
  • Creating new approaches to textile and design processes, production, and commercialization.

The results

Transitions brings together education, research and practice to accelerate the transition to a circular and digital fashion industry. The project has resulted in:

  • A modular training programme focused on Industry 4.0 and a circular fashion system
  • Transition Labs: practice-oriented learning environments in which students and professionals work on real-world challenges from the sector
  • New teaching methods that combine technology, design and sustainability
  • Innovative approaches to design, production and business models within the textile and fashion sector
  • Stronger collaboration across the supply chain, with education, businesses and other stakeholders working together on solutions

With these outcomes, Transitions supports students, designers and professionals in developing the skills needed for a future-proof, circular fashion industry.
