Impact Monitoring Johan Cruyff Foundation

The Johan Cruyff Foundation works with the Sport Management & Sport Business research group and Utrecht University on a fundamental renewal of impact monitoring. Using new methods and tools, researchers make the social impact of Cruyff Courts, Special Cruyff Courts, and disability sports projects visible. This approach supports the Foundation’s impact strategy in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Spain.
Since 2016, Utrecht University has developed monitoring tools for the Johan Cruyff Foundation to measure the impact of its initiatives. Changes in strategy, the need to update the Theory of Change, and new innovative ambitions make a fundamental review necessary.
Together with the Sport Management & Sport Business research group, Utrecht University develops a new monitoring approach. This approach combines qualitative and quantitative evaluations. The renewal includes an updated Theory of Change, innovative tools, and more effective analyses. These steps help maximise the social impact of sport facilities.
This project not only improves understanding of the impact of Cruyff Courts, but also strengthens the link between sport, society, and research.

Aim
To make the social impact of the Johan Cruyff Foundation visible and increase this impact at neighbourhood and international level through renewed monitoring and strategy development.
Approach
We review the Theory of Change and develop qualitative and quantitative monitoring tools. We test these tools in pilot projects. Account managers can use the tools easily and receive training and support for implementation. Comparative case studies and analyses of municipal data support this process.
Social Impact
The Johan Cruyff Foundation gains better insight into the impact of its activities. The project strengthens strategic communication and supports a society that encourages physical activity in focus countries.
Contribution to research and education
The project strengthens collaboration between research and social practice. Students and researchers learn to apply impact evaluations in real-world settings. They also contribute to innovative sports and social policy.
