RISO Printer
Stencil printing or screen printing is the best way to describe RISO printing. A banana-leaf-based film is stretched over a drum with a screen. A laser creates tiny holes in the film. Ink is then pushed through these holes onto the paper. The inks are sustainable — most are made from rice bran oil and are printed cold.
Available inks: Red, Green, Blue, Black, Grey, White, Brown, Teal, Gold (soy oil), Fluorescent Yellow, Fluorescent Pink & Fluorescent Orange. These inks can also be mixed.
The RISO in the Makers Lab is a double-drum A3 printer, allowing you to print two colors in one pass. The machine can be operated both analog and digital.
Analog by placing your design on the scanner to create a master film for the color layer you want to print. The scanner reads your design in grayscale, and those values determine how much ink is applied to the paper.
Digital by sending your design as a print job from the computer. This also creates a master film for the color layer. By converting your design to grayscale, you control the amount of ink that will be printed.
The best paper for a RISO printer is uncoated A3 paper. This paper has open fibers, allowing for maximum ink contrast. It also dries faster — only 1.5 hours. Standard printer paper takes about four hours to dry. The uncoated Biotop paper also never gets stuck in the machine.

Each master costs €0.75. A3 Biotop paper is available for €0.10 per sheet.
You can also bring your own paper — just make sure it’s uncoated and between 70 and 240 gsm.

Stack Cutter
The Ideal 4350 is an electric stack paper cutter with an automatic paper clamp. With this cutter, you can cut stacks of paper or books up to 4 cm thick in a single cut.
Preparation
Decide in advance the dimensions you want to cut.
The stack cutter uses a back gauge, allowing you to trim with 0.1 mm precision.
The minimum distance from the blade to the back gauge is 3.5 cm.
You can cut a 2 mm strip as long as the leftover piece is at least 3.5 cm wide.
Specifications
- Max paper width: 43 cm
- Max insertion depth (against the back gauge): 43.5 cm
- Min insertion depth (against the back gauge): 3.5 cm
- Max cutting height: 4 cm
