Required English proficiency

Don't worry; your English doesn't need to be perfect. However, we do require a certain level of proficiency in order to participate in your exchange at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.

Experience of a lifetime!

We want you to have the experience of a lifetime during your exchange at AUAS! To ensure this, both in the classroom and during social events, a certain level of English proficiency is necessary. Without it, you may not fully enjoy your study period. It could be challenging to understand and participate in class discussions, as well as to successfully pass exams or presentations, potentially impacting your grades negatively. In such cases, we recommend improving your English before embarking on your exchange journey, whether it be next semester or next year. Additionally, social interactions with people from diverse cultures around the world are an integral part of your exchange experience, and these interactions become much more enriching with a sufficient level of English proficiency.

Required level of English

There are multiple levels of English:

Beginner Intermediate Advanced
A1 - basic user B1 - intermediate C1 - advanced
A2 - beginner B2 - upper intermediate C2 - proficient

For your exchange period at the AUAS we do need at least B2 level.

Do I need to prove my English level?

If you are already studying in an English-speaking country, such as Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Singapore or the United States, you will not need to provide proof of your English proficiency.

However, if you are studying in any other country, we do require proof of your English proficiency, please check below how to prove it!

How do I need to prove it?

There are two options to prove your level of English:

  1. You can take an English proficiency test such as IELTS or TOEFL. Please note that there are associated costs.

    • You will need to achieve at least an IELTS score of [insert required score] or a TOEFL score of [insert required score].
  2. The International Office of your home university can issue a declaration confirming your sufficient English proficiency.*

    • Please inquire with your International Office if they can provide you with such a declaration. If they have doubts, you may need to take a test. In some cases, International Offices may not issue such statements, and in that case, you will need to choose option 1 and provide an English test score.

You or your international Office of your home country can send this proof directly to our AUAS International Office.

Any questions?

Please contact the AUAS International Office.

* If you have the nationality of Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, or the United States we recommend this option. As well as if you have another nationality and completed your high school diploma in one of these countries.
