Prof. Geert J.P. Savelsbergh is professor by special appointment of the Desmond Tutu chair for Sport and Youth. He is also head of the Motor Learning & Performance section of the Movement Sciences department of VU University Amsterdam. He works for the AUAS as professor by special appointment of Talent Development in Sport and Movement (part-time). He has been academic coordinator of the Amsterdam Institute for Sport Science (AISS) since 2014.

Importance of the chair

Geert Savelsbergh conducts fundamental and applied research into perceptual and motor development and learning, with a particular focus on the role of visual information in and regulation of human movement. Based on this perception-action paradigm, fundamental concepts (e.g. ability to anticipate; pattern recognition) are applied in a sports context in order to further the development of talent (cricket, golf, hockey, tennis, rugby, football and sailing). He is also co-founder of the ‘Athletic Skills Model for optimum talent development’ (ASM), in which he collaborates with the city councils of Amsterdam and Almere, a number of different sports associations, senior secondary vocational education programmes and higher professional education programmes.
