Roeland van Geuns (1954) is a Professor of Poverty Interventions. Within the Research Group Roeland studies how social service providers can work in a more effective and more professional manner in order to promote self-determination and participation among the inhabitants of Amsterdam. The Research Group devotes special attention to inhabitants who are not able to stay in control of their own lives and are or are at risk of becoming financially dependent on welfare bodies.

Roeland van Geuns was a co-founder of Regioplan research and consultancy agency in Amsterdam in the 1980s. Since then, he has become a specialist in the field of social security. Roeland’s passion for the public interest emanates from his great commitment to the position of people who are unable to participate in the job market through no fault of their own.

Throughout his career Roeland has always devoted a lot of attention to municipal policy, such as social assistance benefit, poverty reduction, debt rescheduling and welfare policy. As a member of the Reintegration Guild and the Debt Rescheduling Guild, he has contributed to the further development of academic knowledge on reintegration and debt rescheduling and converting this into an effective approach in practice.
