Arie Wilschut earned his MA in History and Art History at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) in the Netherlands. He subsequently became a teacher of history in Dutch secondary education and soon thereafter a didactician at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS). His main interests are how people deal with history, how history affects their thinking and existence, and how they are taught history.

He earned his PhD from the University of Amsterdam with a doctoral thesis in historical theory and didactics: Beelden van tijd: de rol van historisch tijdsbewustzijn bij het leren van geschiedenis (published in the United States as Images of Time: the role of an historical consciousness of time in learning history).

In 2000 and 2001, he was Secretary to the Commission on History and Social Sciences ('De Rooy Commission'), playing an important role in designing the universal 'ten-era system' for Dutch history education. Between 2006 and 2010, he spearheaded the implementation of this new era system in the final exam experiment for senior general secondary education and pre-university education.
