Profile Merel Noorman

Merel Noorman’s research and teaching activities lie at the intersection of AI, ethics, and governance. She has a background in Artificial Intelligence, Science and Technology Studies (STS), and philosophy of technology. Thanks to this interdisciplinary expertise, she bridges technological developments with the social and ethical considerations of developing and using AI.

A central theme in her work is the democratization of AI: how can society maintain control over technological innovation, and how can democratic oversight be ensured as systems become more complex? Democratization here refers not only to making AI accessible to citizens, companies, and public organizations, but also to embedding transparency, explainability, and societal values in the design and use of AI systems. In collaboration with practice-based partners, she develops sustainable and responsible socio-technical solutions for the challenges posed by digital innovations.
