Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education

-

Diversity in higher education is receiving significant attention. Institutions strive for a climate in which everyone, regardless of gender, background, age, orientation, or disability, can optimally utilize their talent. This requires active and continuous commitment from employees to combat exclusion and promote inclusion. In this project, we collaborate with employees within institutions to seek insights for improving daily practices in the field of diversity and inclusion.

Practice-Oriented Approach

To effectively embed diversity and inclusion in higher education, a practice-oriented approach is essential. The project aims to develop and implement actions with practitioners to create an inclusive, diverse, and safe learning and working environment. We use a broad definition of diversity, focusing on visible (e.g., age, skin color), less visible (e.g., cultural background, physical characteristics), and invisible (e.g., sexual preference, work style) aspects. The project aligns with the ambitions of the national action plan for greater diversity and inclusion in higher education.

With a practice-oriented approach, we focus on achieving results. To this end, we have developed a methodology. The methodology emphasizes the scope for action of teams or departments. Together with the team or department, we arrive at concrete actions.

Goal

The goal of this action research is to generate more knowledge and awareness about the value and importance of greater diversity and inclusion in higher education. The longitudinal nature of the action research helps to keep diversity and inclusion on the agenda within institutions. This helps to improve support and awareness within the institutions.
