Towards a More Inclusive Selection Process

How can we design recruitment and selection processes in a way that makes them inclusive? And what exactly is inclusive selection? The research project "Towards a More Inclusive Selection Process" aims to answer these questions, with the goal of providing HR professionals with tools to make internal and external recruitment and selection processes more inclusive. Previous research on skills-based recruitment and selection shows that the composition of a selection committee affects selection outcomes. The research indicates that biases regarding gender, background, and/or age play a smaller role in anonymized, skills-based applications.
Gaining Insight into Mechanisms
The current research on recruitment and selection processes therefore focuses on the selection process, the composition of selection committees, and the extent to which different committee compositions lead to diversity in selection. The goal is to gain insight into the mechanisms that contribute to inclusive internal and external recruitment and selection of candidates. In the pursuit of inclusive selection, awareness of potential biases and their prevention is crucial.
The dual main question central to the research is:
What mechanisms in the recruitment and selection processes influence the internal and external recruitment and selection of candidates, and which recruitment and selection processes can HR professionals improve to optimize these processes for greater diversity and inclusion?
Planning and Methodology
The research consists of two parts. The first part focuses on the functioning of internal and external recruitment. We will interview HR professionals and employees involved in recruitment and selection.
The second part consists of a selection experiment. The aim is to determine whether groups of selectors with different characteristics in different compositions arrive at the same or different results.
The first findings will be shared in the second quarter of 2025.
