Addressing Workload

-

Research indicates that more than half of university of applied sciences (HBO) lecturers experience excessive workload. This results in psychological complaints, decreased job satisfaction, and prolonged absenteeism. Reducing workload is not a simple task. In this project, we are experimenting with three different approaches to develop tailored solutions.

ChallengeĀ

Research during the pandemic shows concerns among lecturers about future workload. Other research confirms this. Workload in higher education is high. In higher education, there are various views and measures to address workload. Recommendations propose diverse workload-reducing measures. For some measures, evidence of effectiveness is lacking. Many proposals use a one-size-fits-all approach, while the causes of workload can vary.Ā

GoalĀ

The goal of the project is to develop customized workload-reducing measures for the participating teams through three experiments. By creating and implementing these tailored solutions, the project directly contributes to reducing workload.Ā

Project MethodologyĀ

In the project, we investigate through three action-oriented experiments which factors increase workload and what control options lecturers have regarding these factors. Based on these insights, we develop measures and/or actions together with the teams and team members to reduce workload. With this practical approach, we directly contribute to reducing workload in the participating teams.Ā

ResultsĀ

  • Reduction of workload in participating teams.Ā

  • Supportive measures to reduce workload.Ā

  • Final report with recommendations for broader application.Ā
