In-company Leadership Programme Excelsior Foundation

Football club Excelsior Rotterdam is more than a sport club. The club offers opportunities for the athletic development of players and supports society. Through various projects, the Excelsior Foundation helps improve the lives of people, groups, and neighbourhoods in the Rotterdam region.
The Excelsior Foundation runs complex projects with strong social impact. This requires clear organisation and strong leadership. For this reason, the Sport Management & Sport Business research group develops a leadership programme for project leaders, commissioned by the Foundation.
In this programme, project leaders learn how to apply organisational principles in their daily work. Key topics include Theory of Change, value creation, and leadership. The programme is practice-based and combines theory with personal development.
The programme equips project leaders with practical tools to structure complex projects with confidence and create value in a dynamic environment.

Aim
The aim is to develop a programme in which project leaders learn to organise, plan, and lead more effectively. This helps them deliver complex projects more efficiently and with greater impact.
Method
The programme consists of 4 interactive sessions:
- Theory of Change and Value Creation in Professional Football
Applying theoretical models to real-life cases - Organisational Principles
Structuring and planning projects - Leadership
Managing teams and processes - Personal Leadership
Self-reflection and personal growth
Interactive sessions and exercises allow participants to apply theory directly in practice.
Expected results/products
Participants develop management and leadership skills. The programme delivers practical insights and tools that can be used immediately.
Social impact
The Excelsior Foundation strengthens social projects by supporting project leaders in organising and delivering projects more effectively. This leads to more efficient processes and better outcomes.
Contribution to education and research
The project translates new organisational knowledge into a practical programme. This creates strong interaction between theory and practice. It also offers opportunities to improve teaching methods and gain new insights into project management for social organisations.
