Intercultural Chatbots: Using Generative AI to Enhance Intercultural Learning

How can we help students develop intercultural communication skills without sending everyone abroad? This project develops an AI-based tool that lets students practice different cultural communication styles.
Project approach
We are developing an educational innovation based on Intercultural Chatbots: AI-driven agents that can mimic distinct cultural communication styles. These chatbots use advanced Large Language Models (LLMs), trained to represent specific communication patterns. Students will work with one of the chatbots to solve a complex business case, giving them a realistic intercultural learning experience.
Societal impact
At AMSIB, we prepare our students for the international job market of the future. Intercultural communication is essential. Our new tool offers an innovative way for students to practice these skills, by making use of AI.”

Dr. Joep Hofhuis
Project leader
Once validated, these chatbots could also be applied beyond education. Healthcare institutions, governments, and businesses may use them to enhance inclusive communication with diverse audiences.
Link with education
The project is directly linked to the intercultural learning lines at AMSIB. The chatbots will be implemented in the Cross-Cultural Management course (year 2 of International Business).
