  • Nanda Piersma

    Scientific Director / Member of the Social and Economic Council

    Nanda Piersma is the scientific director of the Centre of Expertise Applied Artificial Intelligence. She is responsible for the functioning of the CoE and the quality of the research conducted within the CoE's laboratories. Nanda has a background in mathematics (PhD).

  • Geert Wissink

    Program manager CoE Applied AI

    Geert Wissink is the program manager of the Centre of Expertise Applied AI. He has a background as program manager at Leiden University Medical Center and, prior to that, as a member of the management team at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision.

    Community Manager CoE Applied AI

    Liza Verheijke is the Community Manager of the Centre of Expertise Applied Artificial Intelligence at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. She is an enthusiastic connector with a diverse background in community management, presenting, events, communication, Spanish language and culture, and journalism.

    Communications officer CoE Applied AI

    Susanna Ströer has been working as a communications officer at the Centre of Expertise Applied Artificial Intelligence since January 2024. Susanna is an alumna of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, where she studied Communication and Multimedia Design.

    With the Smart Health and Vitality Lab, Jesse aims to support students, lecturers, and researchers in the rapid technological developments in the field of AI, which also affect the fields of health, exercise, sports, and nutrition.

  • Bert Bredeweg

    Lecturer in Didactics of Science Subjects

    Bert works on topics such as learning through Conceptual Modeling, in particular cause-and-effect thinking, Gamification, and Learning Analytics. Within the Smart Education Lab, he conducts research into enriching education with AI technology.

  • Jurjen Helmus

    Professor of Industrial Digital Twins

    Jurjen Helmus (1980) has been Professor of Industrial Digital Twins at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences since 2024. He has conducted a PhD research at the University of Amsterdam, where he built agent based simulation models for charge infrastructure electric vehicles.

  • Kees van Montfort

    Senior lecturer/researcher

    As Senior Lecturer in Data Science and AI at the University of Applied Sciences, Kees conducts research into the optimal use and implementation of AI in the field of Finance & Accounting. Kees works on AI at the Centre for Financial Innovation and is therefore affiliated with the Centre of Expertise Applied AI.

  • Ivar Timmer

    Lecturer Legal Management & Technology

    Mr. Ivar Timmer is a lecturer in Legal Management & Technology and research coordinator at the Legal Tech Lab, part of the Centre of Expertise Applied Artificial Intelligence. His areas of interest are the (re)design of legal services and processes (legal service design), with a particular focus on technology and AI (legal tech) and legal risk management.

  • Jesse Weltevreden

    Lecturer Digital Commerce

    Dr. Jesse Weltevreden has been a lecturer in Digital Commerce at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences since April 2010. He heads the Centre for Market Insights, one of the AI labs of the Centre of Expertise Applied AI. In that role, he is co-owner of RankMyAI: an independent platform that ranks more than 25,000 AI tools.

  • Pascal Wiggers

    Professor of Responsible IT

    As of April 1, 2024, Pascal Wiggers is the professor of the Responsible IT research group at the Faculty of Digital Media & Creative Industries (FDMCI). Before this role, he was an associate professor of Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI), a part of the Responsible IT research group. In this position, Wiggers focused on developing AI based on public values, considering the individual, social, and ethical consequences of AI.
