What we do
In order to make sense of the technology of AI and land it in practice in a responsible and inclusive way, the AUAS invests in the development of research and education of applied AI. This is done within our Centre of Expertise Applied Artificial Intelligence.
Artificial Intelligence (often abbreviated to AI) is found everywhere in our society. Scientific advances are rapid, and these often directly link to everyday life. Just think of Generative AI like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, which is probably used by yourself, your friends and family. These types of applications affect all sectors and professions - to a greater or lesser extent. We, as the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, see it as our mission to train and educate on the various topics surrounding AI. To innovate with AI, you need a good understanding of the application area, i.e., where AI can be deployed. In our seven labs, we apply AI to specific domains.t
Everybody 'AI-ready'
We are building a community of students, lecturers, researchers and external partners who find each other around the topic of applied AI. We ensure that we are accessible to everyone and that we can easily exchange knowledge. For example, we have our own student council that includes students from various AUAS programs. They think along with our activities, give advice on the role of AI within the AUAS and organize their own events to reach other students.
For us, it is important that the technology and application of AI is discussed throughout the university. That is why we stood at the cradle of the Master's program in Applied Artificial Intelligence(opens in new window). This Dutch-language Master's program started in 2022. In the second semester of the program, students conduct their graduation research in one of our hands-on AI labs.
Part of a strong AI-ecosystem

Amsterdam AI
The Centre of Expertise Applied AI has its roots in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Region and is therefore part of a strong innovative business network. We work closely together with partners in the Amsterdam AI(opens in new window) coalition, which are: University of Amsterdam, Vrije Universiteit, Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, City of Amsterdam, Amsterdam UMC, Dutch Cancer Institute, Sanquin and Amsterdam Economic Board. Everything we do in this partnership is focused on the human-centered, fair, equitable, safe and reliable application of AI.

RAAIT
Within the Responsible Applied Artificial InTelligence (RAAIT(opens in new window)) program, we are working on “human” Artificial Intelligence, together with the Utrecht and Rotterdam universities of applied sciences and various practice partners. Within RAAIT, we investigate how to use AI responsibly, in such a way that people, society and the planet benefit. We experiment and innovate a lot in the process!
Dutch Applied AI Award
Every year, our Centre of Expertise Applied AI, together with Computable and the podcast called De Dataloog, rewards an innovative initiative in the field of applied AI. To this end, we present the Dutch Applied AI Award, one of the jury prizes to be awarded during the annual Computable Awards in the Jaarbeurs Utrecht.
This year is the sixth time we are presenting the award. The jury - consisting of five experts in the field of Applied AI - judges all entries on three criteria: Applied AI, Uniqueness and Responsible AI.
