City of the future

Every time we build, we create a lasting impact on the identity, resilience and direction of a place and its environment. From this perspective, the Spatial Urban Transformation research group at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences conducts practice-oriented research into urban redevelopment, densification and public space. The emphasis here is on liveability and solving major social transitions.

In many cities, building up is the only way to meet massive demand. But how can we ensure all of this dense vertical development does not sacrifice urban quality of life? In their book Neuroarchitecture, Frank Suurenbroek and Gideon Spanjar show how new technologies can be harnessed to create appealing spaces. ‘We make these places for humans, so let's also scale them to humans.’
