Proof of financial means for living expenses

The Dutch Government sets financial requirements for those wishing to immigrate. In order to comply you must submit a proof of financial means.

What is the Proof of financial means for living expenses?

The Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) requires that you have sufficient financial means to cover your stay in the Netherlands. The required minimum amount set by the IND is €1.225 a month.** This means that students who come to AUAS need to show that they have sufficient financial resources. Please note that this payment is refundable. Please keep in mind that you need to demonstrate this requirement every academic year (only applicable for students studying more than one year).

  • Proof of Financial means for living expenses for one semester: €7.350
  • Proof of Financial Means for living expenses for one academic year/2 semesters: €14.700

** Although the IND maintains an income standard of €1.217,96 for students, we have set the standard at €1.225 to make sure that you meet the minimum required amount in case of banking costs or exchange rates. The amount of €1.225 is non-negotiable.

Please note that we strongly advise students in these uncertain times to bring enough money with you (besides the required amount for the proof of financial means for living expenses set by the IND) to sustain yourself in the first two months after arrival, since it can take some time to open a Dutch bank account.

Studying longer than one year? Please keep in mind that you need to demonstrate your proof of financial means for living expenses + full tuition fee amount every academic year via a yearly statement.

How to provide your Proof of financial means for living expenses?

There are several ways to prove your financial means for living expenses. You can choose which option is most suitable or convenient for you. If the requirements are not met we can not accept the proof of financial means for living expenses.

Option 1: Transfer full amount to AUAS and receive a refund

The first option is to transfer the required amount directly into our bank account. You will receive a refund of the amount in the first month of your study programme.
If you choose this option, please take note of the following and write in the reference:

  • AUAS VVR + your full name (last name, first name) + your date of birth (dd-mm-yyyy)”
  • This is the only way we can locate your payment(s).
  • Make sure that you indicate that you will pay for all the international transaction costs. If you fail to do so you need to transfer the remaining amount separately!
  • Keep in mind to start the process in time for international transfers can take up to 10 working days to arrive in the AUAS account.

The IND needs to check that you have enough money to cover your tuition fee and proof of financial means for living expenses. This means that you cannot pay your tuition fee from the proof of the financial means for living expenses amount. If you are obliged to use option 1 ‘transfer’, this will not be a problem, but for option 2 you need to take the following into account:

1. First transfer the total tuition fee and IND fee to our AUAS account.
2. The date of your scholarship letter preferably needs to be later than the date of your transfer of the tuition fee and IND fee.
