Teaching in English: the bilingual classroom

In this course, you will gain hands-on experience teaching your subject in English in primary or secondary education in the Netherlands and learn about the role of the language in learning and assessment.

Bilingual education essentially aims to widen the horizon for pupils at school: across cultures and beyond the national boundaries. In this course, you will be studying in English alongside teacher education students from other countries. To enhance your English language skills, you will have lessons from a Cambridge-certified examiner. Cross-cultural education will challenge you to become aware of cultural aspects during an international project. You will compare national and international educational systems and experience what internationalisation has to offer.

You will learn what it takes to develop subject understanding, language proficiency and cultural competences with your pupils and enable them to take different perspectives. Repeated visits to a school in the Amsterdam region will enable you to observe and experience bilingual education in practice. You will be asked to design lesson activities and possibly try them out yourself in the classes.
