Creating the Desire for Change in Higher Education - Tools

While integrating research into teaching is increasingly an aim in higher education, there are often many different perspectives and ways to achieve this. The Higher Education, Research and Innovation Department (HERI) has developed instruments and workshops to discuss research integration. These can help at when discussing individual modules, whole curricula, or even organisational change. The tools are themed in: 1. Strategy and oversight, 2. Qualities of research, 3. Professionalism and Research.
1. Strategy and Oversight
These instruments and workshops can help to provide a strategic overview of educational change. This can help your team decide what the focus of the change should be, or how to measure the results of the change.
The tools
- Strategy Mapping - get an overview of the strategy for connecting research and education.
- String Instrument - discuss implementation during an educational change project.
- Landscape overview - get an overview of the relevant factors affecting your change project.
2. Qualities of Research
Research means different things to different people, contexts and disciplines. These instruments and workshops help you discuss these perspectives, defining what ‘quality’ means for you, and what kind of research is appropriate for your context.
The tools
- Quality of Research - discuss what quality research means for your team.
- Perspectives of Research - distinguish between scholarship, inquiry and research for your team.
- Certainty and Risk of Research - discuss the purpose and related risk of student research.
- Phases of Research - discuss what activities and assignments comprise research, and therefore what should be part of the curriculum.
- Autonomy and Complexity (RAC-T) -discuss the level of research expected of students.
- New Aspects of Research (NAR-T) - discuss the level and content of research skills students need during and after their education.
- Research level and content (RLC-I) - highlight strengths and weaknesses between curricula.
3. Professionalism and Research
Research is increasingly seen as important for high quality professional action. These instruments and workshops help your team discuss the role of research in professional routine (daily practice) and how professional innovation (finding new insights and incorporating this into daily practice) is built on research.
The Tools
- Routine versus Innovation in Professional Action - discuss professional routine (daily practice) and innovation (finding new insights and incorporating this into daily practice) in your team.
- Professional Differences Framework – discuss how research is positioned differently between types of professionals.
