Immigration

I'm an international non-EU student and need a residence permit for study purposes. What is the immigration process like?

Check the AUAS Immigration page. The AUAS immigration department will apply for a residence permit for study purposes on your behalf. They will contact you in May to provide instructions about the immigration process. One important step in the immigration process to be aware of is providing the proof of financial means for living expenses.

What are the costs of the immigration process?

Check here the immigration costs.  You need to pay a fee for the Dutch Immigration Service and provide a returnable deposit as the proof of financial means for living expenses. Please note that the proof of financial means for living expenses is not a payment and is fully refunded to you after the start of your studies.

I have another question about immigration.

Check the frequently asked questions page about immigration here.  To contact the AUAS immigration department, you can send an email to [email protected].

Tuition fees

What are the tuition fees?

Check the page with tuition fees. The tuition fees differ depending on your situation.

How and when can I pay the tuition fees?

EU applicants
As of May you will be able to pay the tuition fees in Studielink. It is possible to pay in monthly instalments. The deadline to arrange payment of the tuition fees is 31 August.

Non-EU applicants
Paying the tuition fees is part of the immigration process. In May, you will receive instructions from the AUAS immigration department by email to prepare your immigration file and to pay the tuition fees. For your first study year, you cannot pay the tuition fees in monthly instalments. Starting from your second year, if you have a Dutch bank account, you can pay in monthly instalments.

International students: Scholarships and funding your studies

Are there any scholarships for this programme?

EU applicants
You can check on the Dutch government website to see if you are eligible for student funding (opens in new window) from the Dutch government.

Non-EU applicants
You may be eligible for the NL Scholarship that the AUAS offers. For more information check the scholarship page.

Can I receive funding for public transport?

You may be eligible for a student travel product from the Dutch government. You can check the student travel product website (opens in new window)  (opens in new window)to see if you are eligible.

Can I work while following the programme?

Check the working while studying  to see which rules and regulations apply.

EU applicants:  If you are from the EU/EEA or Switzerland, you are free to work without restrictions. However, if you start to work alongside your studies you do need to take out a specific health insurance type. If you fail to do so, you might face a high fine from the Dutch government.
Non-EU applicants:  If you work with a company, you will also need a work permit. It is important to be aware of the regulations because otherwise you are in violation of your residence permit.

International students: Housing & preparing to arrive in the Netherlands

How can I find accommodation in the Netherlands?

Amsterdam is one of the most popular university cities in the Netherlands, so the demand for reasonably priced accommodation is very high. Since Dutch universities are not allowed to own housing properties under Dutch law, the AUAS cannot facilitate accommodations for all international students. You are ultimately responsible for your own accommodation. To assist international students with finding suitable accommodation, the AUAS has agreements with various housing corporations in Amsterdam to provide furnished accommodation for a maximum period of one year. To make the allocation of housing as fair as possible for all, we work with a lottery draw which takes place in early June. Read more about housing.

What are the costs of living in the Netherlands?

Please take a look at our estimate of cost of living expenses.

What do I need to do before I arrive in the Netherlands?

You can find everything you need to do before and upon your arrival in the Netherlands on the Upon Arrival website. If you have any questions about your arrival, you can send an email to [email protected].

How can I contact the AUAS housing department?

Please visit Housing Contact and FAQ.
